It all started when…

I created the Laroche Approach because I wanted to take a dance class where I learned music and could sing while I danced. I could kick ass doing a dance combination, and I could belt my face off (when properly warmed) but putting the two together I watched my stamina crumble.

I searched high and low. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a class like this did not exist. But this is exactly what we do as Ensemble members in Musical Theatre! This is exactly what we do as a Principal in Musical Theatre! The first time we do this can’t be when we’re contracted, hired and onstage. Can it?

When you audition you do a dance call and/ sing & read. They are always separate and never together. This benefits the creative departments hiring you because they can isolate your particular gift and assess. The first time you actually put together a score and choreography is in the rehearsal room building a show. As an artist, you don’t get to train and finesse that particular muscle within yourself that is necessary for breath support to achieve both simultanteously.

I figured this class did not exist because maybe it wasn’t a good idea. Maybe it was stupid. Maybe there’s no point and we keep the status quo. Or just maybe.. it’s everything.

 

JEANAI LA VITA (Vocal teacher)

Jeanai is a dedicated and highly effective voice instructor with over 20 years of teaching and directing experience. In addition to maintaining a thriving private voice studio in NYC, Jeanai is on voice faculty at Manhattan School of Music and Stony Brook University. 

Jeanai has decades of performing experience with leading companies in Broadway musicals, opera, operetta and concert. She worked with Stephen Sondheim, earning his direct praise in her performance of his musical, Anyone Can Whistle. She is a professionally trained dancer, actor and athlete. www.Jeanai.com
